Sleep isn’t happening. I fling my tired body from one side of the bed to the other in restless agitation, constantly checking my phone for a message from Sadie. Moonlight seeps through the gaps in the curtains, but even this glimmer of light isn’t enough to subdue the dark thoughts whirling through my mind. My ability to get a heads-up about the future is pointless if Vince dies and my purpose will evaporate like a puddle in searing Auckland sun. Knowing I tried my hardest to save him isn’t enough.

A text beeps. I bolt upright and scrabble in the dark for my phone, knocking it off my bedside table and onto the floor. Cursing, I grope around for it and hold it against my chest. Before I read the message sent a minute after midnight, I look to the ceiling and pray to whatever deity is out there that Vince is alive.

He’s stable. I’m going to hospital in morning x

I blow out a long exhale, ridding my lungs of yesterday’s air.

I type back. I’m coming with you.
